Can I join the Navy if I was previously on Anti-Depressants?

Hi everyone I was wondering if you could help. I have recently applied for the Royal Navy as an AET, a couple years ago I was prescribed a very small dose of anti depressants which I took for a couple month and was taken off them.

A few months ago I was feeling down and I was prescribed them again but never took them, I have now called my GP and they said they didn’t think I have ever need them so I have been completely discharged. Do you think this will affect me joining the Royal Navy? I definitely do not think I was depressed I was just going through a bad time in my life and I was prescribed them straight away before anything else! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would ask your AFCO as there is nobody medically qualified on this site to answer. However I do believe you have to be a certain time clear of them maybe 1-3 years however that’s not definite. Good luck in your application.

Until someone medically qualified pops along -(I don't think we have anyone by the way).
Have a look using the 'SEARCH' facility and see if anything matches your concerns.
Then, next stop, your local AFCO.
I have to say as a non qualified person. Why would a Doc prescribe anti depressants if you don't need them!!! Remember, if you start the process, your medical documents will be scrutinised by naval medical staff so be honest and open.
Good luck.

Thanks for your help. Yes that’s what the GP was confused about, I went to the doctors once to say I was down and if they could recommend anything and they just put me straight on anti depressants. When I got prescribed them a few months ago I never took them and got taken off the straight away, so I don’t think that should count. I’m just going to be honest at my medical and hope they understand. Thanks for your help people

Post RN I had a issue which required me to see a therapist. (PTSD). First thing she discussed was what meds to put me on. Being older and wiser. I stood up to walk out stating I wasn't here for medication I was here to talk my problems through. She backed down.
You have to be quite firm with medico's to avoid what goes on your medical records.
Good luck, AET is a good trade.

This is very true, although quite difficult to accomplish. For example, a medical officer might have the power to have one certified and there is very little one can do about it. I suppose one could hire a lawyer, but that could be expensive.

I have always found that, when feeling a little depressed, chocolate goes a long way towards uplifting the spirit. There was a chocolate bar that I particularly enjoyed years back. It was similar to a Twix, but produced by Rowntree, and was called "Take Two".

Such a shame that one cannot buy it anymore.

Have a look at Defence Statistics Health figures for 2019,Table2:_
Armed Forces personnel prescribed antidepressants by service and officer/rank status, numbers.
All :- 945 Officers 6,828 Rank
Naval Service 252 Officers 1,248 Rank.
It's interesting for Viagra too.
All:- Officers 230 803 Rank
Naval Service 59 Officers 217 rank
It lists what the drugs were for antidepressants ---Agomelatine to Zispin Soltab
For Viagra --- Avanafil to Vizarsin

Bear in mind that these people are already serving and it will probably have no relevance to your circumstances.

But Jack from the North East will be able to get drugs for his depression during his time in the navy. That's important to him.

I think you mean an ounce of naval nous. That alone clearly separates us, as you, clearly, have rather less than your fair share it seems

Insults so soon!!! And I thought we could be friends!!!
We can be muckers oppos mates raggies --not sure about "friends"looka a little civilian.
Insults? You appear not to have received any if you think that was one.
As a FAA type perhaps "Observation" would be more apposite?

But I am a civilian. I haven't been a serviceman for many a year!
I live today not yesterday!
Seems you can't leave it behind you!!!
