Business Development Manager (Defence) – West Midlands - c£45k + Car and benefits

Our client,based in Cradley Heath –West Midlands, is a long established, family owned business, in the process of building a strong management team, as part of its medium to long term strategic plan for growth and eventual succession.

It is focused on the generation of profitable sales, primarily within Defence – especially Navy - and also in the Marine, Moorings, Power Distribution, Rail, Airport & similar markets.


The Business Development Manager will target customers with their range of specialist safety critical components for customers such as the Navy, first tier Defence contractors and other similar organisations in the sectors above.

With a technically based defence related background, the Business Development Manager will focus primarily on the UK and some international markets with responsibility for:


· Working in conjunction with the Managing Director and the business plan to win profitable business through effective "engineering solution" selling into the MOD, OEM's and Prime Contractors

· All aspects of the sales process, including contract negotiation, PQQ’s, Tender submission, pricing, payment, warranty, program duration

· Developing long term, close, supportive relationships with customers and end users

· Close liaison with the Technical estimator/sales administration team

· Liaising with the Operations department and the MD to establish correct technical specifications, or to instigate engineering work to fulfil customer requirements

· Taking the lead with regard to planning for and attendance at events such as trade shows and customer tests.

· Building a marketing presence and assisting with the development of the company brand


The Business Development Manager should:

· Have a proven track record in Sales and Business Development within the Naval sector and ideally one or more of the other target market sectors

· Have quality/safety critical mechanical component/ assemblies experience

· Have HND or degree level intellect with demonstrable experience in selling mechanical /technical product

· Be familiar with tender processes, milestones, quality acceptance testing, plus the operational requirements of UK and Overseas defence providers

· Preferably have some personal contacts(s) from within the Defence industry

· Be equally comfortable with both commercial and technical negotiations

· Have, or be able to achieve security clearances

· Possess drive & energy; be decisive, but patient and diplomatic; be persistent and persuasive; be friendly, but professional and experienced at developing long term relationships with customers

· Have a full UK driving license

· Be looking for a long term role and have the potential to progress within the organisation to more senior roles
