This is absolutely devastating news. Does this mean that I am going to have to revert to drinking beer?

You could always try Spanish Cava, the better ones can be quite good and the Spaniards do not limit their production like the Frogs. I am sure Nutty can suggest a few good ones for you.
Surely old boy that would be like putting the Rolls Royce flying lady on an Escort

More like changing from a tired old Roller to a thrusting new BMW.

Cava only comes from Spain, like Proseco comes from Italy. Philistines.

There is nothing wrong with Cava, infact served correctly it tastes better than some Champagnes.

Try:

Cordinu
Campo Viejo Brut or Rose (new on the market)

Add creme de casis for a kir royal type drink

Stick away from Freixenet (Freixenasty)
