Perhaps if prisons and young offenders institutes were returned from the en-suite hotels that they have become to the spartan conditions that they used to be things may change. At present a spell in the nick is treated by many as a holiday.

I'm not being funny but the prisons i've unfortunate enough to have to visit weren't the palacial affairs people seem to think. I never saw T.V's in their cells and just looked bloody depressing!

The prison in Jersey is called the La Moye - known locally as La Moye Hilton. Individual cells, TVs, gaming consoles ...deterrent? I don't think so.
When I retired they had not quite got round to T .V.s in cells but it was on the way. The buzz word throughout the service was time out of cell so;- the tosser of a governor we had at that time to amass brownie points added time on production at crown and magistrates court as time out of cell. As we were a remand prison we topped the league.

Fair enough, but I am now 33 and I don't ever remember it any differently. Neither does my 43 year old brother, incidentally he has a 5 inch scar on his cheek from 1983 which proves knife crime wasn't born yesterday. For 20 odd years I have watched us get cnuted in pubs, smash the place up in massive fights and act the same. I've also watched as Brits embarrass us abroad in a wide variety of places with their ignorance, attitude and willingness to get physical.

We have earnt this reputation, and yes I agree our Judical system is all worng, but it doesn't hide the fact that we as a race are, and always have been, *********. History is littered with proof of it, it's just we choose to ignore it.

The only difference is that now we are getting away with it. I for one, despite being a proud Englishman, completely understand why foreigners hate us

Well I am just a trifle older than you or your brother, and certainly as a youngster I would have done every thing to avoid being spotted pissed by plod, and certainly would never have faced up to plod as seems coomon today. The same applied not only to my mates but almost every Jack I knew and I met some hard bitten old 3 badgers.

Equally in the holiday spots the nationality which was most disliked were the young nouveau riche square heads who had money to burn and liked to show it. We of course couldn't get the cash out the country even if we could afford it because we were paying of the last lot of Labour created debt.

At least we're good at something.

We're not aggresive you b*stard and if you keep saying it I will nut you kick your f*ckin nuts up your kilt and stomp on your f*ckin head. 8O

Not long before HMP's get a award for excellence in the way it educates and cares for the clientele they accommodate.

No longer do the names Durham, Isle of White and Portland nicks mean incarceration to there occupants.

Prisons are no longer deterrents to the criminals of this country.

I bet these figures were calculated on percentage of population and as we are one of the smaller countries in europe with possibly (I could be wrong) a smaller population than say germany then our offenders will make more of an impact on our percentage than say someone with double our population.

We as in Briton do have a long very violent history we once ruled half the world so I am going to blame it on our genes. We are natural born warriors which is why we are so violent. USA isn't violent they are just trigger happy, there is nothing hard or clever about shooting someone as we know it's mostly 12 year olds in our country that do this. Real men have pub brawls and organised football fights.

Whilst I'd balk at a blanket condemnation of the UK ( we have given the world much that is good, don't forget that), the three real failings of the Brits appear to be :

Attitude to alcohol - this goes back to the Middle Ages - working class works all week, bloody long hours for little pay. Sunday was given to getting as much John Barleycorn as poss down the hatch in order to forget a miserable existence, with Monday well known for being a 'recuperation' day. A culture of excess developed from that .

We are an island....while this has undoubtedly saved our arses on many occasions over the years, we still regard other European coutries as 'Continental' while we are 'British'......

Combine this with the fact the global lingua franca is English, our linguistic abilities are dire, to an embarassing extent and we do not engage with other nations through tv channels exchange trips and just culturally as we might.....

I too have cringed when witnessing Brits abroad - Cracow last August was a point in question.....group of lads on a stag do in this beautiful old city, bellowing through the main square....awful. It's very sad because it does give us a bad rap when louts are not the entire story.

I dont agree with that. i try and make the effort to speak the lingo when i go abroad to Europe and they just speak back at you in English and then drip that we are lazy!!

However watching a biffer at Alicante airport some years ago shouting at till staff of a well known fast food chain because she didn't speak English made me want to go over and crown the bitch!!!

I'm afraid the concept we have always been like this is a myth. Back in the 50s and 60s town centres didn't look like WW3 had broken out on Friday and Saturday nights. Now we have to have taxi queeques stewarded and police to stop violence, going out for a quiet drink in a city centre is a thing of the past. Why I was young anti social behaviour was not tolerated, thus was reasonably controlled, now if you get legless they will give you a lift home rather than free B&B and a chat with the Magistrate on Monday or perhaps Tuesday.

I suspect with regard to your comments on Crakow, if the lads you saw had been rounded up and given the opportunity to sober up in Plods cells they may have behaved a trifle better next time. As it is they will keep coming back and keep misbehaving, because they get away with it.

Wev really do need to claim back our streets and find cost effective and workable ways of making anti social behaviour feel the stong arm of the law.

This is a good idea but too many people in Briton don't want to get involved and take positive action. They would rather rest on their laurels and bitch and moan about how bad our country is getting.

I can see Monty's point here and I would agree that Brits are inherently aggressive. Though I think Maxi is correct. It hasn't always been like this. When I was a kid, the local beat copper knew us all, who our parents were and where we lived. Minor trangressions were sorted out by him with a good bollo*king or a thick ear. It was usually effective. Nowadays, community spirit doesn't exist; there are no local beat officers, Joe Public has no faith in the justice system and is afraid to make a stand, fearing that he will be prosecuted for any retribution or that the perpetrators will not be punished in the courts and will come looking for him.
The violence I remember from my youth was always for a reason, albeit very trivial sometimes, these days it's often totally unprovoked and on scale seldom seen back then. Fisticuffs is one thing, knives, glasses, kicking someone who is down and out of a fight until they're unconscious (or dead in some cases), is a different matter. I am honestly very worried for my son when he is old enough to go out drinking.
My last point, I think it was sussex, said alcohol was to blame. Obviously it contributes greatly, but to blame that solely, I think is a cop out. The media love to blame "binge drinking" as the root of all evil. However, I enjoy a good sesh, as do my mates. Yes, I've had my fair share of punch ups, but I've yet to do any of the things mentioned above. I will be down the Barbican tonight (very drunk) and I guarantee that neither me nor my mates will glass/stab etc. anybody.
Fix the justice system and get police out from behind desks and on the street and we may get somewhere to restoring public order.

Indeed, Brits (usually young) in groups abroad are often embarrassing. Yes, we do need to claim our streets back and actually do something about it, rather than bind about it. The problem now is that we no long have a deferential society. Not in itself a bad thing but poking fun at Authority for the passed 60+ years has resulted in us having no credible authority. We’ve all got right’s; including 7 year old snot gobblers with “attitude". Of course, a 7 year old with rights and an attitude with no fear of Authority tend to become p**sed 17 year olds (and 27 year olds) with the same credentials. Also, for the last 60+ years, children have been encouraged by American television, our own “enlightened" television and free expression education to become unruly, rowdy, self centred and everything expressed at the top of their voice brats. Wind, seeds and whirlwinds spring to mind. Aren’t the things we see in ours and other’s streets pretty close to what Club 18-30 holidays aimed for? Well they were harmless, weren’t they!

In one respect, I’m quite glad that we are a Nation of violent nutters. It does mean that if we have to go up against Johnny Foreigner again, as a Nation, that channelled aggression could be our saviour. It would be rather nice to have some discipline and self control in the meantime, though.

Like tiddlyoggie, I do not believe being p**ed up creates violence. The violence is already there. Alcohol removes the inhibitions and provides an excuse. Blaming drink and legislating/taxing it to oblivion is, of course, far simpler than curing the underlying problem. We need to start teaching self discipline, restraint and respect for (and I don’t mean the fashionable Caribbean “respect, mon†either) others. Rather like we used to before commercialism and the fluffies took over.

I do not think our propensity for violence is in any way unique, you will find it in many places. It is more that in the UK violence has become tolerated. Here you get a lesser sentence for beating up old people than you do for just robbing them, crime against property is seen as far more important than crime agaist people.

Secondly as I have said above we have made taking action against anti social behaviour almost impossible, partly because we do not take either non custodial punishment or behaviour modification therapy seriously.

Community service is a great idea, but very frew places seen really to make it work yet it can and does work well elsewhere. Behaviour modification has all but stopped because of highly public campaigns by the like of the Scum and the Wail suggesting it was rewarding thugs. The end result is that thousands of baby thugs have now become big thugs with thousands more baby thugs coming along behind.

Justice is not cheap, but too many of our polititians don't seem to see this. Plods and the courts are underfunded, sentencing policy is up sh1t creek and they don't know what a paddle is, and our law is no longer used to protect the public, rather it protects the eneemies of the public.
