Branch Shortages

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Can anyone tell me if there any particular branches which there are currently shortages of recruits, just out of interest

  2. Is there still a shortage of STC's, bloody hell I qualified for that back in '84 and they promised more money and all the glory I could handle, but pusser shot through again and I dipped out in favour of a skin junior RP

It's achievable but you do need to have a DV Clearance for it. Also, I do believe you have to sign the non-disclosure act as well hence you don't hear much about them like DHU, SRR (what used to be 14 Int for the oldies on here) and SFSG.

It's like listening to a foreign language!
  5. You do have to be an Elite to get into the STC Branch be it STC (UW) or STC (AW)

    Sorry shippers!

DV-Developed Vetting allows regular and uncontrolled access to v sensitive stuff. More here...

    DHU-Defence Humint (Human Intelligence) Unit

SRR-Special Reconnaissance Regiment (sneaky beakys who live in a hole for 2/3 weeks)

SFSG-Special Forces Support Group which is made up of 1 Para, a company of booties and a squadron from the RAF Regiment with ancillary support from Siggies etc

Like the CT specialisation, not much can be mentioned about STC (UW) or (AW) on here I'm sorry to say.

Gents-please play by the rules and be careful what you say about the specialisation on here. Thank you.

In complete honesty, there aren't many trades we're short of at present with regard recruitment.

Doubtless those serving at the 'coalface' will state otherwise until they read a little further....

The fact that there maybe shortfalls in certain trades at the coalface, we have sufficient suitable future recruits ready to join most trades - problem is that there are limited training places & they need to be trained before they reach the billets available.

There are very few trades that have waiting times less than 6 months, even in the submarine world: WS(TSM) for example, can anticipate up to a 2 year wait to join. Logs(CS)(D)(SM) formerly known as Steward Submariner is about the rarest recruit sought at present, but again can anticipate a good few months (3 to 6) wait, assuming they are found suitable.

Despite all the loud proclamations regarding the supposed recovery from recession, the number of applicants wishing to join (or indeed re-join) the Armed Forces, seem to be constant & high tempo. What is unusual is that usually at this time of year it peters-out as potential joiners mistakenly think they will be in Afghanistan for Christmas - this year they are still applying to join regardless.
  8. Ah right, thanks all for all the information.

I've got my interview, medical and physical on wednesday for AET, so hopefully I'll pass everything :)
