Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. A really well researched book, giving the truest account of the Naval Brigade during the Boer War ,1899 - 1902.
Can you imagine dismounting a 6" gun , making a gun carriage in the dockyard and 48 hours later test firing?? .The carriage design being a back of a fag packet type sketch, by Commander Percy Scott of HMS Terrible.

HMS Powerful? I believe it was the reenactment for Q Victoria that spawned the Field Gun Comp (the one with big field guns, not Brickwoods). When it comes to Gunnery Officers, for me Percy Scott was right up there as second god to Fisher; he drove director firing when others wanted, as usual, no change, no improvement, no science. Got done in by Beresford for one indiscreet signal ('Paintwork seems to be in more demand than Gunnery').
  3. Would it be correct to say that the Brickwoods Trophy runs 9 Pounders and the ,now abated, Royal Tournament crews ran with 12 Pounders?
