Body Mass Index too low - BRNC January 2017

Ab670

Hi everyone,

I am commencing my Initial Officer Training at BRNC on the 2nd January 2017.

I have one concern. I am a keen runner, 21 year old female, 175cm tall, with a weight of 50.7kg. This puts me on the BMI scale at 16.5.

My healthy weight range according to NHS BMI calculator is 56.7kg - 76.9kg.

I am trying to put on weight, but finding it hard.

Will I be medically discharged, despite being determined to put on weight?

What nutritional advice can anyone give me? I am aware that mass gainers are an option, but not informed of their effectiveness.

Any support would be much appreciated! :)

My son had this problem and he had Mutant Mass shakes. We got them from a body building/health food shop. It worked for him he put on about 6lb to get him to the proper bmi. I know it's not an ideal way but it worked :)

Yes, and maybe not the cheapest method either, however I really am determined not to be sent home! Thank you :)

AB670 I am afraid I cannot help, low BMI is not a problem I have ever had.
but I would say go and speak to you GP, as just taking advice from other fitness types may not be the best advice?
you could stop training over Christmas and just pig out, it always works for me:)

Eat more. I'm not being glib, but eat more.

In the longer term, your weight will go up as you'll be doing less phys. Also look at gaining muscle mass in the longer term, if only to stave off osteoporosis when you are older!

Ma'am,
(Benefit, doubt etc.)

Before you consider taking anything other than food developed by God (other creationist theories are available) please do read this website: http://www.informed-sport.com/armed-forces-education

This is the site approved by the Drugs & Alcohol Team (prevention team, not a heap of guys who are particularly skilled in consuming them) for guidance on what may be taken. Please be aware that having anything in your body that has not been properly prescribed might also result in a prompt departure from BRNC/RN.

I wish you well in your new career.

What if I am below the BMI 18 mark? Do you look more into detail i.e. make sure you keep fit, eating etc. ?
So far as I'm aware the medical standards with regard bmi, despite its known flaws, are rigidly applied. The obvious concern being potential eating disorders.

The medical officer calls the shots on that one and I have heard of mass gain supplements being prescribed but similar to those tipping the top end of bmi, recruits can be and are discharged for falling outside the parameters if adequate headway is not made.
