Bigger Navy

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Defence Secretary, Micheal Fallon, has announced a £13.5 million shipbuilding contract. (BBC iPlayer) 60 patrol boats will protect the two carriers. "We are going to see a bigger Royal Navy and the flagship will be here in Portsmouth". Don't know how big the patrol boats are going to be, but if my arithmetic is right, 60 into £13.5 million comes out at £225,000 each. Ain't gonna get much for that!
  2. They are RIBs and ******* dear at &200k a pop.
  3. Full size trial version already being tested and approved by MoD.

Coracle Class reasonably fast attack patrol boat.

  5. Why do you think they are putting dosh into small un-manned craft, protection will be a bunch of teenagers with remotes, they will think they are playing war games?
  6. So, "Patrol Boats" turn out to R.I.B.s. Talk about playing with words! Another complete idiot as Defence Sec.

  8. Seadog, what the fcuk is "hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy"?
  9. Where are they to get the Engineering and other skilled Technicians from?
    Enlarging the Commonwealth?
Cameroon Mozambique Namibia and Rwanda are already erstwhile members. They have provided the Cooks and Stewards. The Eastern European countries have surplus skilled engineers. Are they the putative new members?
  10. "after this, therefore because of this" or to put it another way if Event B happens after Event A, Event A must have caused Event B, which is flawed logic.

If you are smart enough to rate the SoS Defence a 'complete idiot'; you should be smart enough not to need a logical fallacy spelled out. Nevertheless, Wrecker L has provided a pointer.
  12. Seadog, so rather than speak in "plain" language, talk gobbledegook, then no bugger will have a clue what you are on about! (unless you have a university degree) I take it the quote is Latin. That was NOT one of the subjects I was taught at Ganges. Having witnessed plenty of "Defence" ministers, I stand by my comment that Fallon is another in the long line of "idiot" ministers. (what experience has he had with the Armed services? NONE!!) With your obvious superior schooling and your infinite wisdom, can you please explain to me how RIBs and Parol Boats are the same thing. Also, how will they provide "ocean" escorts for the soon to be white elephants?

ps. I probably won't read your reply, as I am going into hiding before the "thought" Police come knocking on my door.

Actually Fallon is one of the best SofS we've had in years, along with Phillip Hammond.

Between them they managed to ensure the MOD got the single best budget settlement going in Whitehall (so good that the Treasury are spitting blood about it still) and got the RN a really good deal.

If you want to judge him as an 'idiot' because he used a phrase in a minor speech then so be it. Personally I think he's done a bloody good job, and done it well.

    Note I said years.

In last 20 years, in no particular order I'd say Robertson, Hammond and Fallon are by far the stand outs, with Reid and hutton as second division but good.
  17. And (buff) hoon quite possibly the worst!

In 1998, Canada purchased four Upholder-class submarines and a suite of trainers from the Royal Navy to replace their decommissioned Oberon-class submarines. The Upholder class entered Royal Navy service from 1990 to 1993 at the end of the Cold War, and were deemed surplus as part of the Peace Dividend and refocus on a nuclear submarine fleet. They were placed into storage until Canada purchased them.

On 5 October 2004 HMCS Chicoutimi, sailing from Faslane Naval Base to Nova Scotia declared an emergency north-west of Ireland following a fire on board. The fire was caused by seawater entering through open hatches in rough seas. It soaked electrical insulation which had not been sufficiently waterproofed (since it conformed to an older specification than the three other submarines), starting a fire. The Chicoutimi lost power and was rescued by Royal Navy frigates HMSMontrose and Marlborough on 6 October. Lt(N) Chris Saunders died subsequently from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Following claims made in the Canadian media about the cause of the fire, blaming the UK for supplying an unsafe vessel, Hoon accompanied his condolences for Saunders stating that Canada as the buyer had to beware. In Canada, many World War II veterans were outraged by his comments, considering Canada's sacrifice for Britain during both World Wars.

Cantab Law Graduates from Derby ---appointed by Blair-- clearly do not make the best Armed Forces Minister. He knew the meaning of Caveat Emptor though. That's an Oxbridge education for you-more suited to the useless Permanent Secretary MOD, than its SoS.

"That's an Oxbridge education for you-more suited to the useless Permanent Secretary MOD, than its SoS."

you mean the 'useless' PUS Jon Thompson, who went to that well known Oxford outpost of Norwich college in Norfolk, and who is probably the single best PUS in the last 30 years?

This may come as a shock but not only is Jon (he insists on being called Jon, not Sir or PUS) a superbly good PUS, he is a good leader, a great manager and one of the main reasons why MOD got such a good budgetary settlement.

Frankly your hatred for anyone who doesnt fit into your pre-determined view of the world is far more elitist than the current senior leadership in the MOD.

It's not a quote, it's a form of logical fallacy and Wrecker explained it. Latin is all around you, unless you live On Mars. And there is always Google.
