Big help with interview tomorrow

Grant780

Midshipman
i applied for a warfare specialist submariner ( sensors ) and i believe I go to the submarine school for an extra 4 months . But I don't know what I'll be doing there and I don't know what I will be doing afterwards,
Can somebody please help as I have my interview tomorrow

At the submarine school you will undertake your branch specific training, so in your case you will be taught all about sonar - what it's for and how it works, and what you do with it. Assuming you mean Sonar...there are other forms of sensors...if it's the other form just replace the word sonar with whatever the other type of sensor might be.
At some stage you will undertake 'SMQ' either in Plymouth or Faslane - this course teaches you how submarines work.

Thank you, I've read that after phase two I would be going to collingwood ? Would SMQ be classed as phase 3? :/

SMQ is phase two I believe, so submariners have a fair amount of time spent in that particular regime.

So In the hms Raleigh submarine school I'll learn both about my branch training and how the submarine works?

No, I believe it will be about your specific trade at the submarine school. SMQ is on Devonport (Plymouth) and/or Faslane - SMQ is submarine bit.
Edit: I see from the website that all this training appears to be rolled up into one place. I am not certain that this is accurate. My understanding is that you do branch training at the RNSMS and then SMQ at either Devonport or Faslane. Might be worth a 'live chat' on the RN website.

Says in my professional training I'd be in the submarine school learning abouts the submarines

I know, that's what it says on the website. But I'm uncertain how accurate that is...I also don't know who wrote it. It may also be that something has changed and the SMQ element has moved into the RNSMS. However, I'm fairly certain that SMQ is delivered outside of the RNSMS i.e in Devonport and Faslane. I have checked this with the MOD website. And I walk past SMQ south on an almost daily basis and it would seem that the instructors still sit with their faces pressed up against the windows squashing their little noses whilst they wait for people to join the RN and undertake submarine training... ;)

The confusion occurs because SMQs line managership goes to the RNSMS....in Raleigh...

This should help:
'On leaving either the Submarine School, HMS Raleigh, HMS Sultan or Collingwood, future submariners will join SMQ (North) or (South) for a ten week dry phase training period, which will consist of both classroom and practical instruction whilst utilising submarine platforms alongside. Having completed a final examination and oral board the students will pass out and be ready to join their first submarine in order to complete their SMQ Wet Phase. It is during this period that they consolidate and complete their SMQ training and, upon successful completion, they will be awarded their Royal Navy Submarine Dolphins'.

I don't know how long the training is at Portsmouth.

If the interviewer asks if you have any questions, say something like "I've heard the RN do missile testing...what went wrong last year?" This will make you look knowledgeable whilst expressing a keen thirst for more information...try to maintain a look of indifference and innocence as you shrug your shoulders with apparent confusion...
