Best roles for overseas opportunities.

Hows it going guys, im currently serving in the Raf and im looking to transfer over. Ive seen a few trades that seem interesting, however i dont know what navy life is like so im asking for some guidance.
So far ive seen:

Mine clearance diver
air traffic control officer
PTI
Engineering onboard (forgot the name of the role)
Or warfare specialist submarine.

ideally im looking for a trade thats going to allow me to be on board and overseas constantly as i want to travel and im sick of being stuck on base 24/7. If you can let me know if these trades are worth it or not that be great.

also if you can suggest any roles that are better than what ive suggested im all ears.
Thanks

Quite a spread. From ATC officer, Marine Engineer and PTI!!!!

As for overseas jobs!!! Marine Engineer. But don't expect a suntan!!! Lots of time below deck!!!

If it's a sun tan your after - PTI!!! Ours even managed a tan down the FI's in winter!!!!

And if your after busy but UK based ATC officer!!

However, as you want to spend your time abroad. FFL. French Foreign Legion. They seem to spend a lifetime abroad!!!

i only have combat role skills. So im trying to stay away from RMC as its not much different from my current job.

If you are looking for plenty of sea time, have a look at this role:

As for the mine clearance divers do you know what their job lifestyle is like? As this is the trade im currently leaning towards. Do they spend alot of time away? Or are they just sat down Portsmouth do absolutely nothing.

Loads of sea time as a stoker - and guaranteed to trap when you get a run ashore - it’s the Essence of Diesel aftershave that does it - but luckily there is an alternative - especially if you like painting - loads of time in the fresh air on the upper deck with your 2” brush and pot of ship’s side grey as a seaman - or whatever they’re called these days

Stoker - It's this job, the term comes from when ships ran on coal.

Not 'stocker' - stoker.

A hangover from the days of coal-fuelled steamships when a lot of those 'down below' were employed stoking the boilers with coal.

Equipment has changed but the nickname lives on.

Ahh roger haha.

do you know much about mine clearance divers? In terms of them being at sea alot? I don’t want to be stuck at base 24/7. That’s the reason I’m leaving the raf.

Something it's advisable to be aware of is that there has been a break in the recruitment of divers recently - I see that a poster has mentioned being able to apply recently, however.

What this might mean, though, is that the wait for a start date could really be very long.

By the way, Northern Diving Group and Southern Diving Group are UK based - you may get a draft as a Diver in the UK.

One other caveat I would offer is that the fitness requirement for Diver is greater than that for most other roles. You would also have to pass a 3 day Potential Diver Assessment which is not for the faint-hearted.

If your top choice is Diver, I would suggest running this by a RN Careers Advisor in one of the AFCOs - I wouldn't want you to make career plans based on something which might not be possible for a couple of years.

Where is your nearest large town/city?

The number for the RN Careers Advisors in Cambridge is:

01223 315118

As you are really interested in Mine Clearance Diver and since you are transferring from the RAF, I would give them a quick call. If the wait to join as a Diver would be 2 years, it's best that you know now so that you can re-think your plans.

You should be able to catch them on the 'phone this morning, if you have time.

They will tell you how long the wait will be and also about the procedure for transferring from the RAF to the RN.

Let us know what they say, if you can.
