Best Branch for Officer

Discussion in 'Joining Up - Royal Navy Recruiting' started by corriere, Feb 5, 2015.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Top o' th' mornin' to everyone!

I'm keen on being an occifer in HM's fleet but I'm not too concerned by which branch I go into. Which is the best branch for being accepted quickly? I'm well-qualified, fit, no criminal record, etc. 28 though so warfare's out.

    Many thanks!

Unless you've got a vocational degree (Engineering, Theology, Environmental Sciences, Nursing or Medicine) Logs is the only option for non-grads. If you have a random degree TM is also a possiblity.

    Have a shufty on the RN website and/or call 03456 07 55 55.

If that doesn't work, flip a coin & good luck.

  3. Thanks for the advice. I do have a degree, a 2.1 in languages. Which would/could/should I go into training quicker for? TM or logs?

I'd be inclined to find out what the job involves before letting the time span influence my decision.

One job involves going to sea, the other hardly ever.

    TM is the shortage category.

Please don't use the phrase 'occifer' - you just sound like an idiot.

  7. It's not that I haven't looked into what TM and logs involve, it's just that I could see myself doing either of them. There's not much in it, so I thought a good tie-breaker was just finding out which would get me into the navy quicker. The advice is very useful, thanks very much!
  8. Occifer is far preferable to "pigs" as they were called in my day .I must admit though, that in a number of cases it was quite appropriate.
  9. Throbber.

    That's appropriate.
  10. Don't use the term idiot you will sound like an occifer:p:D:p

Let me guess, you were the one on 3 deck selling copies of Socialist worker and wondering why nobody liked you?
  12. You should be careful PT, glass houses and all that! :)

  13. TM and Logs are very different jobs so I don't see how you can think 'There's not much in it'. I definitely wouldn't let application time influence your decision - you could be doing this job for years, potentially until you are 60. So picking based on being able to join a few months earlier would be a bit foolish.

  15. More F Deck on Implacable watching fire-fighters extinguishing a fire-not caused by enemy action-but by some cretinous Purple Twiglet doppelganger moron, lighting up his Ticklers during Petrol Venting.
  16. Well, that proved me right and then some. Cheers.
  17. HMS Implacable was decommissioned in 1955, are you speaking from a personal experience?
If so you are an even older fart than myself.
Now how did you identify it was an hoccifers rollup that caused the fire, in my day hocifers smoked tailor made ciggies, or if they really wanted to look important a meersham pipe
  18. Is hossifer more acceptable?

I was going to say, considering the thread title, that officers don't have branches as they never go out on a limb.

They don't have branches but do have planks.

    etc etc etc
  19. I was on Implacable.
Hadn't realised that Purple Twiglet was of the genus Sus Barbatus--They really have let standards drop.
The offender was a National Service Met Obs.
  20. As an old and bold ATF how about putting your service record on RR like most of us have.
It should make an interesting read.:D
