BBC News: "Two Nimrod UK Spy Planes Reprieved Until June At Least"

Ha ha ha Cameron.

Suddenly you realise that you do require the Armed Forces after all, at short notice, unexpectedly. What would have happened say in 4 months time when there were to be none left? Go to the EU, NATO and say "sorry chaps, binned all our planes a couple of months ago. You know how it is, cut backs ....Labour Party .....Bankers".

In fairness, the decision to bin R1 was taken by Labour and it's interesting that many in Land and elsewhere have argued that airborne SIGINT was not required.

However, it's fair to say that recent events have driven home to HMG just how critical a sovereign capability like this is! Let's hope that the 3 months extension becomes one of 3 years until RJ arrives and that a few other capability losses/'holidays' get revisited.

Regards,
MM

Actually we plan on around 5000.

Most of those will of course be involved in writing further staff papers undermining CVF and recommedning the amalgamation of the RN into a reformed RAF Marine Branch. Additional white fluffy cats will also be procured for petting whilst we plot world domination. 8)

MM

MM: Will this "RAF Marine Branch" be required Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays? If so, a lot of Crabs are gonna be seriously hacked off...

Hmmn, banter aside, I'm rather pleased Cameron is begining to realise the magnitude of his folly with regard wholescale military cuts in light of the SDSR - whoever is politically responsible for the claimed overspend.

Whilst the tragic consequences unfolding in Japan inevitably increase in magnitude, my hope is that once again the armed forces can demonstrate their worth with regard humanitarian aid to civil powers and highlight the need to keep investing rather than relentlessly hacking & slashing manpower, wages/pensions & equipment...

The only right you have as any kind of civil servant is the right to ingest vast quantities of ethylene glycol thereby saving said government a fortune.
