BBC News" Charles De Gaulle Carrier"

Do we not have HMS Ocean patrolling off Libya? Its from this Assault ship apache helicopters will be deployed when needed. RAF fixed wing aircraft were capable to fly from Italy to Libya and back on bombing missions so there is no need for an RN fixed wing carrier.

HMS Illustrious has just finished a refit and will be relieving HMS Ocean shortly while she has a refit to 2014.

I hope you don’t seriously believe that flying aircraft from Italy is a more sensible option than using a carrier. If you do, consider how many of the hundreds (520 up to 24 May) of two-hour, 1,200 mile round trips flown by RAF aircraft from their rented facilities at Gioia del Colle to the Libyan coast (£70k per flying hour for a Typhoon plus the cost of aerial refuelling) could have been saved if we'd had carrier-borne aircraft. Then consider the fact that the Harrier AV-8Bs flying from USS Kearsarge were achieving twice the sortie rate of their land-based counterparts (link). Finally, consider the faster reaction time of aircraft based within a few minutes of the Libyan coast.

P.S. See my signature block in conjunction with this article: Harrier dump jets.

If you think that having the RAF flying from very expensive airbases in Italy is a good alternative to having a carrier in the area then you are possibly more naive than most newbies on this forum.

I don't think anything sunshine, neither am I the current Prime Minister, Foreign minister or Defence minister of the UK government who along with their coalition partners made the decision to scrap the harrier jump jets and the carrier Ark Royal they operated from.

So what is your position then? Do we need carriers or not, in your opinion?

Its not what I believe, I am only a 70 year old veteran from the RN with no authority whatever. Its what David Cameron and the Tory/Lib/Dem government think is more sensible to suit the defense budget. Those of higher authority elected by the people and make decisions in the House of Commons not only believe it but they have already approved of the RAF aircraft flying missions over Libya from Italy.

That decision was already made for them.

Having left the RN that many years ago I couldn't care less whether HM Government have carriers or not.
It wont make one bit of difference to my life.

The financial crisis affected many affluent countries, I expect you think the Broon was responsible for that? You don't see these other countries decimating their Armed Forces. This new gang of clowns of ours have been in charge for over a year so don't you think it's time you stopped trotting out the same old blame game shite?

Sent from my armchair generals armchair.

Regardless of your political view, its obvious that the Armed Forces have been run down by succesive governments of leanings various. There isn't any one party to blame, they all have one thing in common - the ability to applauded and praise the military when simultaneously regarding it as an expensive non-essential.

We have constantly seen errosion and increased HMT oversight since the 50s, each succesive Government just compounds the issues.

I chuckle when I think that everyone who is a serving member of the RN can be fitted into an average premier league football ground. You could stand on the centre spot and spin 360 and see all of your oppos.

Defence has evolved hugely during my time for the good, the bad and the indifferent, depending on your point of view. Most of the lost manpower has become civilianised.

To what levels can politicians reduce the the number of serving personnel and still provide an effective fighting force?
