Basic Training - a few question

  1. Hi guys, Ive passed all of my interviews and stuff and have a date for basic training (royal navy) for the end of April.

Now a few questions if I may....

    1) How does basic training work - is it like say get up at 7am , train until 12pm, lunch, then train until say 5pm or something? Also - do you get weekends off?

    2) During basic training, do you ever get to go home? When I had my pre entry brief thing, the man said something about you might get summer leave - but when I join I will be past that or something? Can anyone shed any light on this for me please :)

    3) So you cant take laptops or anything expensive - has anyone took something like a psp or something along those lines? I have to travel from Leicester to Cornwall - and the journeys like 4 hours!! Ill be bored as hell lol - even though it wont really bother me too much , would like something to do! :)

But thanks guys - these have been on my mind for a while now and if you can answer them - that would be great! :D

  2. 1) get up before 6:30, train all day, scran at 1200 and 1730, clean and scrub until 2230

    2) NO you join after Easter and leave before Summer leave

    3) Buy a book FFS

  3. Hi BB,

If you are due to join on the 26th April, then you will have just missed the 2 week Easter break. Your next main leave is 3 (Poss 4) weeks in August, therefore, this means that your 9 weeks at Raleigh will be straight through without a break. Your normal day will be up at around 5am breakfast between 6 and 7, start training from 0800 through till 1630 with a break for lunch. You will have stuff to do most evenings and weekends, however, you may be given the chance for the odd evening or afternoon off during the first 9 weeks if you have everything well squared away (Sorted). When you get to your phase 2 training (Specialist training) you will get far more time off including evenings and weekends

My advice is not to take anything to Raleigh other than your mobile phone, the kit list provided and a sense of humour. Take a book or mag to read on the train.

    Regards

  4. Yes - or a newspaper...(cheaper) - plus it'll have lots of pictures in it...

Or you could always just talk to someone, bit old fashioned I know but i've heard that people still do that...talk to each other that is.

Many of these youngsters seem to be unable to read and get embarrassed taking out Janet & John Book 6 on the train. :p

  6. Cheers guys - and I can read ( just ;) ) so may well just take a book.

Bit of a rubbish thing that I cant go home on the weekends - my birthday is going to be on a saturday while in basic training, wouldve been great to go home for that weekend - but no biggy I spose.

  7. And aswell - when you say clean and scrub from 17:30 - 22:30 , 5 hours doing what? Is that like get yaself washed down and chill out for a bit?

I know this isnt the main objective of basic training, but what can you do for fun in there when you do get some free time?

  8.  They will probably grant you Compasionate Leave, for your Birthday As i have been told that retention is a big issue in todays RN ,by my peers

  9. So you think they would possibly let me have it off? And what do ya mean that retention is a big issue? :)

  10. I'm sitting here praying that Hig doesn't spot this one.

  11. You need to get your kit and bedspace, as well as any communal areas, clean and tidy (not like your mum expects at home, but military clean and tidy). You also need to press your uniform and polish your shoes. You'll also be working as a team so it'd be in your interests to help out anyone who is struggling when you are done too (and to kick the sh1t out of lazy [email protected], these will be the bain of your life at the start).

It's only 9 weeks though - just remember that and it won't be so bad!

  12. See the GI/DO on arrival and ask for a request form. Retention is a big issue in the RN today   they dont want you to go running home to Mum on the first day!!

  13. Ahhhh I getya, so you think they would be scared if they dont let me have the day off and would think Ill pack the navy in altogether?

Why is retention rates so high then in the RN? Anything I should know....?

  14. mwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  15. Keep it under your hat, TYPE 45 = 6 man berths Ipod Lap tops the bizz, Sch thats between me and you

  16. Roger that! Thats the new ships isnt it they are bringing out? Type 45 destroyers? Went to a meeting in Northampton where they were talking about them - sounds very nice!

And whats the likelihood of me getting my birthday off - bear in mind it is on a Saturday , so shouldnt be too bad should it - I assume the training is very low key on saturday and sunday? Could be extremely wrong though!!

Im quite excited with the aspect of me getting me birthday off - but its not the end of the world if I dont! :)

  17. Hi BB, I too am joining end of April and travelling from Leicester. You will have my company if you have the same start date! Whats yours?

I'm guessing you didn't go on the RNAC? A lot of your questions were answered on that and I think you might be in for a bit of a shock.
