AWW specialisations?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I'm signing on as a Warefare Spec. I read that after a year or two I'll get to choose between above or below water warfare. I was just curious as to what these specialisations entail as there isn't much information on the RN website and I couldn't find a relevant thread from the last 3 years.

I'm interested mainly in above water but am still interested in below. Most of all, do the AWW unit (?) have snipers? Or anything akin to snipers?
  2. Mainly using a 4.5".

If you want to be a sniper, join the Royal Marines!

Close range weapons use to mostly involve yelling "black and decker black and decker lager lager lager" in between bronzing... A power nap was usually interrupted most unpleasantly... Dirty bastard upper deck crews!

  7. you will shout the word 'bang' a lot
you probably will get the choice taken away from you
and again, depends on your cleaning skills

It always amuses me when the "hard done by" Warfare Spec drips about cleaning as if everybody else's Mummy is flown out to clean up after them, but NOT Warfare Specs.

Everyone does their bit, everyone is told about the menial tasks involved in their job - but for some reason memory retention is not an attribute of the branch - particularly amongst those who have not had a full time civilian job prior to joining.

  10. I'm very new to the Navy rhetoric, what is a 4.5"? Is that the calibre of a bullet? Or the length of the mop I get to clean with? I understand everyone has their duties aboard ship, and some of those duties include menially cleaning. Every branch does it, so why do the Warfare Spec always moan about it? I'm currently going through the process of joining up as a WS and all I seem to read on here is either WS whining about their cleaning duty, or others complaining about WS operators complinaing about cleaning. I've been a cleaner before, it's not that bad of a job if you just get on with it, so is there more cleaning for a WS or is it mostly them complaining becuase they can't clean for shit?

Having had the displeasure of visiting warships from a variety of nations, some not shall we say, as fixated with health and hygiene, I feel the RN strikes about the right balance. Going back to the days of the Royal Yacht, where cleanliness was beyond ridiculous and was actually placed ahead of safety, there genuinely was something to drip about. Then again, many would disagree, and not make the connection between ship preservation and healthy living.

As stated previously, young lads who've been waited-on hand and foot by their doting Mums, having never had a job before, struggle to iron a shirt, let alone wash it by hand in initial training. For them, cleaning is done by "other people" and they bleat about it throughout their short military careers, confusing a paid job with living at home.
  12. Ah that puts my mind at rest a little. I'm not the best at washing by hand/ironing, but I am getting prepared for it with the help of YouTube; how to iron properly, wash clothes by hands, hospital corners etc.
  13. 'kinell....thats where I went wrong.....if we'd had you tube back in the day.....hell, my life would have been sooooo much better

  17. Snowman, if you want to go AWW, finding out what weapons you'll play with is good start.

This is the Navy's 4.5" sniper rifle in action.
