Application referred to senior medical officer.

Hi I was wondering what an application being referred to a senior medical officer meant?
About two years ago I was in the army they said I had suspect compartment syndrome however this was never proved In the end I was given the choice between capbadge change or medical discharge I took medical discharge (rather foolishly)

when applying to join the navy I had a supporting letter from my gp explaining i have had 0 symptoms since October 2018 and that she felt as if I was good to go as I am fitter then ever.

any information would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance

SMO(SE) is the Senior Medical Officer (Service Entry) who looks at applications to join the Royal Navy on behalf of Captain Naval Recruiting when there is something on the medical side which needs a further look before going ahead.

This happens occasionally when a candidate with no previous service applies to join - SMO(SE) looks at all of the information and decides on whether the candidate can progress.

In instances where the candidate has previous service in either the Army or the RAF, the regulations (BR3, Ch 12) say that CNR should be contacted if the previous discharge was in certain categories - medical is one.

When the discharge category is medical, BR3 says:

A covering letter and original Medical documents are then to be forwarded to CNR for consideration for entry by the SMO SE. Each case will be considered individually on its merits and, in most cases, forwarded to a Service Medical Consultant for opinion.

In a nutshell, because your discharge from the Army was on Medical grounds, your application has been forwarded to the Senior Medical Officer for appraisal.

SMO(SE) does get very busy at the best of times, so responses can take a while - you just need to be patient now.

I hope that you find this explanation reassuring.

Yes, my top tip for someone when they have been referred to SMO(SE) is 'Be hopeful, be patient'.

Al being well, there will be good news for you in a few weeks' time.

Thank you I do feel as if I was massively misdiagnosed by the army as year and a half of stretching and strength training and it’s better then every just wait and see I guess
