Anyone know what this is?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I recently received this as a gift and I don't have a clue what it is. I can't find any reference to a ship called star of india from 1820 - not even sure if it is even from a ship. Anyone seen one before in any context?

  2. Is it rusty or full of soup?

  3. Looks as if it could possible be a holder/stand for a gimbal compass

  4. Assuming it is standing on its own legs, could it be a 'jokey' soup tureen or punch bowl, made for a ship or company. I can't be arsed Googling (it is Christmas Day, just waiting for SMBO to get ready!), but wasn't Cutty Sark's company/logo the Star of India? And didn't she spend time laid up in Falmouth? Dates of course might be wildly out!

    Tsk.

    It's a hinged watertight ashtray/spitoon or spidkin.

It's a scuttle and deadlight from a merchant ship converted into a rather large ashtray or maybe plant holder.

Could just be generic nautical style furniture.

Yep, my house is full of generic cast brass tables, chairs, wardrobes, sideboard, coffee tables, bookcases, cupboards & chests of drawers.

  12. I concur with Seaweed, it's a modified skimmer chivvy scuttle

Must admit if I received it as a gift, I wouldn't know whether to hit the person with or ask if it was OK to swap it for an iPad as this one didn't fit.

  14. Stick it next to your bed and use it as a night head. It will come in handy during the festive period with all the alcohol consumption.

It is a scuttle from one of the first nuclear subs!

I would question what I had done wrong to get that.

Just the thoughts of a blonde ex wren

  18. Perhaps "The Star of India" was a pub and they had a few nautical looking nick-nacks to dress the place up a bit.
