The serviceman, from 42 Commando, died from enemy fire while on a Christmas Eve mission in the Nad-e-Ali district near Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.

He is the 136th British serviceman to die in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001, and the eleventh Royal Marine to have died in the past two months.

R.I.P.
Our thoughts are with them all.

All deaths are sad, but this one, at this time, particularly so. One's heart goes out to his family, and to the unfortunate soul who had to walk up to their front door on Christmas eve with the terrible news.
RIP Royal.

Ditto to all comments already made. Even more poignant after my posting yesterday about the Sun front page. Wonder if Gordon or one of his minions will be at Wooton Basset this time? Won't beholding my breath. RIP Royal.

I hope this does not offend, and i do not post usually in these theads, but i for one am weary of hearing such sad news as this. And, especially on this day. For his friends and family,

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
