They're complete charlatans! I apologise on behalf of the Royal Naval Medical Service! Not wanting to be stereotypical, but a few brufen generally do the trick. If not, then it needs physio or, if serious, scans etc.

And don't even get me started on homeopathy...

If you are right then why do real doctors refer you to them or even in the case of some actually offer the services, my last GP had an acupuncture specialist.

Alternative medicine is I agree a contentious area, but many 'real' doctors do use alternative therapists, and whilst I agree it is very difficult to show how or why they work but in some cases they clearly do

Thanks Angrydoc, i didnt say anything to my AFCO as i didnt have a proper diagnosis. I have now been referred to specialist and have my appointment on Monday, hopefully he will be able to help me out.

I injured myself in april and have since then being going to the gym 4 times a week, i travelled to the island games in Rhodes and played 5 games of football in 6 days...so my point is im getting on with life just fine. It just is sore quite often and im restricted in my (don't laugh) ?adduction? i think thats the right word. Lifting my straight arm outwards up to my head, i can only go to about 150degrees never all the way to the top. Does that make sense?

Hopefully will get some answers on Monday...heres hoping!

Just to let anyone know whose interest (and cos im really cuffed) i had the all clear from my specialist (well sort of). He told me i have a sub accromial impingement (bad spelling) but that witha few weeks physio it will be sorted out! Yay. He even said he would write a letter to take to the board with me stating that although i did have a problem he gurnatee it will be sorted out sooner rather than later and it shouldnt effect my application!!

hi all, i'm a newbie too and just found this thread about teeth. i broke part of a tooth about 2 years ago and for the past couple of weeks i've had little bits of it falling out. there's now a hole in the tooth and i've heard it's very expensive to get it replaced. it's not causing me any discomfort and i've got through the PJFT, no other medical problems or worries at all. so i think what i'm really asking is whether the RN will disqualify me because of a dodgy tooth?

Quite simply your teeth need to be in good condition before you join particularly as you may well be deployed away from UK for long periods without dental cover. The implications otherwise go without saying.

The RN will not usually consider undertaking ongoing dental treatment but will treat you after you have joined. As with all medical conditions, you can be discharged during phase one training on medical grounds if a pre- existing/known medical issue comes to light. You will undergo dental checks in phase one training.

The advice is try to get an NHS check-up and complete any treatment before you join. Once you complete phase 1 training, dental treatment is free & you will have annual check-ups.

It's a false econmy to expect the RN to fund your treatment initially as you'll be losing £1000 (gross) per month if you get discharged pending treatment.

thx ninja. since your last post i've tried to get a place at my local NHS dentist and i've been on a waiting list ever since. if i go private i'm looking at a pricey bill just for an examination. i've made a few calls and the cheapest repair i'll get is FROM £350!!! i don't have that kind of money...... i'm also one of those people who doesn't like things getting paid for by others so 'm not by any means "expecting" the RN to pay my for my teeth. just hope this tooth thing won't mean i get discharged :(

The obvious advice is that if you're actually in pain, then definitely get it sorted before you join & state you are in pain at the dentist so as you are afforded the correct priority.

If you're not in pain then dental treatment is free after you join but you probably won't have the time for any treatment whilst in the initial stages of training, so don't expect a quick cure.

Good luck!
