AFCO, aptitude test, suggestions for trade?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi all. I've handed in my application for joining the Navy. My test is on the 18th of July. I have a useful psychometric test book, and i really must dig out old GCSE text ooks toget to grips with basic maths (i'm shocking at it).
The man at the AFCO read my first choice of trade (warfare specialist) and said i should keep my options open. It's not the first time people have suggested that another trade may be better... but why is this? And can anyone really sell me their trade, you know, tell me which you think is best and why? I'd appreciate it. Not that i'm presuming i'll have the pick of the trades (though AFCO man figured my qualifications were good, they won't help me pass the test), but if i get lucky, i'd be grateful for your input.

Also, what can i expect from the test? Am i to dress fairly smartly? Does it matter? Any other tips?

  2. Snap, I moved this thread to the Fleet forum.

  3. Log onto the RN's careers website and have a look at Communications Technician, see what you think, if you like the look and have any more questions, PM me.

Good look with the selection tests, I'd say there's no need to wear a suit unless you're being formally interviewed as well, which I doubt, although don't turn up looking like a slob either. Just make sure you're up on your basic maths and English and you should be fine.

Edited to add: Just had a look at it myself on the RN's website and some of the information is a bit out of date, especially the bit about the range of languages.

I agree with Squirrel about choice of branchs! Likewise, pm me also....

Wear a suit though-you should always look smart and trust me it'll make you stand out if some scrote shows up in a tracksuit!
  5. i get lost with all these warfare branches now, it was alot eaiser when it was WEM's and OPS
  6. Thanks, but i can't be a comms tech- don't have GCSE maths! I've had a look at all the trades, just want to hear it from people who've been there and done it.

    Cheers for the help.
  7. Maybe another question to ask the AFCO is what the waiting lists are like for each of the trades. When my son was going through the process a couple of months ago, some of the trades were a 2 year wait and some were 3 months. Could influence decisions a bit. By the way I would definitely dress smartly for the aptitude test and interview.
  8. Any idea of what trades are currently short handed? And do you think this will change in around a years time maybe?
  9. No I'm afraid I can't help you too much on that, all I can tell you is that Aircraft handler was a 2 year wait, whilst Stores Accountant was 7 months, as of March this year.
  10. Any idea on how i could get info for the waiting periods please?
  11. Just ask at your nearest AFCO. They have it all on a nice little spreadsheet!
