Advice needed between roles and day to day life assault ship

#1
hello all,
i am to start training for the royal marines next month and am trying to do my homework and where would best suit myself upon completion, i am applying to be a tel's tech (as allready a qualified electrician)
but i realy like the idea of being attached to an assault ship, and so i was wondering, what the differences are between HMS Ocean and HMS bulwark.
the day to day life, roles in operations?
best opertunaties for further learning and studying.

any help would be most apriciated, or even links to where to find it myself, ive tryed the navys site but its very vague.

thanks for your time

spent 5 years on Fearless - predecessor to Bulwark - and all 4ASRM seemed to do was-
hot climes - sunbathe, train(circuits) or piss up
cold climes- sleep, train (circuits) or piss up!

Oh, and complain about being stuck at sea with matelots!!

I may be way out of date but I was on the old Bulwark way back then and the permanent Bootie detachment were all landing craft trained marines, ships company electricians like myself carried out the maintainance for the boats. I believe this was also the case on the old Intrepid and Fearless. Sorry if I am out of date a wee tad.

ur right POL, 4ASRM were all LC marines- all ships electrics and MEM type stuff was done by ships co.

We've got four ASRM killick stokers, one for each LCU.
All the VP stuff plus anything that the killicks can't do is done by ships co.
As for the RM Det. I don't think too much has changed since the old days ;)

Hi- pm my other half, Steamy_stokes- he was an LMEM on L10.
left there and went to RM Poole- then rejoined fearless as an LCU killick.

hi mate i was a killick stoker on intrepid and fearless and also spent 18 months at rm poole

i dont think being a sparky will help you much as an RM (as i am now a sparky)

as for types of ship
ocean is a Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH)
albion & bulwark are Landing Platform Dock ( LPD)

this means that the LPD's carry Landing Craft Units (LCU)- the way they do this is by flooding inside the rear of the ship to create a floating dock.
LCU's have vehicle carry capabilities
LPD's also have a flight deck for helos
they also carry LCVP's

LPH carry smaller landing craft LCVP (landing craft vehicle personnel ). These can carry a land rover or a Troop of booties
LPH's also have a large flight deck and can off load vehicle's to the LCU's

Re: Advice needed between roles and day to day life assault

thanks all for your rapid responses,

i know being a sparky wont help me in the marines but it will help me being a radio tech i think and have been told my current quals will help towards faster pay rises, from cra#er to cra# then lol

i see what your saying about HMS Bulwark and being LC marines but i was under the impression HMS Ocean has quite a large troop on there and surely will need most trades in ops.

well saying all this it was my AFCO who planted the seed and so far i have learnt they know a lot about nothing lol

thanks guys much luck will be needed over the next 32 weeks.

cheers for your time

Re: Advice needed between roles and day to day life assault

 I'm an ex Comms man from the old Bulwark 'rusty B' & the old Fearless plus I worked with 41Cdo in Malta & other booties all over the place. Bulwark was great, we could get rid of .... sorry, land the booties ashore by helo & boat in about 4 hours, a whole Commando with ammo & stores & support while the yanks would be there for days on end. Booties or the 'green death', 'loyal latrines' or 'green machines' as we effectionately called them, often found themselves going stir crazy onboard and couldn't wait to get ashore and kill things, life onboard is not for everyone especially if you are a trained killer of men and want to do lots of fiz. Having said that, you will travel a lot and have a right good laugh. All our bootie signallers loved the life and we all bunked in the same messdecks. Only downfall was having a bootie Corp as the killick of the mess, thought he was still in the barracks !! Good luck.

Re: Advice needed between roles and day to day life assault

thanks hornblower that was a good insight and what i was after, life on a ship wouldnt be that foreign to me as i currently work on the gas and oil riggs and i can only persume its similar to this but obviously for longer periods of time.

oh well start training in 2 weeks and need to get that out of the way and im sure once in, ill see other options and things to do, i just didnt want to join like 99% of the realy young lads who have no idea and join for very different reasons.

thanks again

 Good morning bunts. I joined her in March 1972 when she was berthed in Malta doing the withdrawal which didn't happen. There were a few of us flew out from Brize in one of those Britannia things courtessy of crab air. You might remember me as Jan R, can we give proper names on this site ?

it isn't just LC Marines on the assault ships, the detachment (LPD) also has signallers, Vehicle mechanics and drivers if memory serves me correctly, signallers for the lcu's, ship and ABU, VM's and Drivers for the ABU (amphibious beach unit) I dont know about the LPH, I cant see much use for the specialist vehicles on one of them.
