    Re: Vive la France!

When I go to France, which is often, I travel on a French built ship registered in France with a French crew. No sign of a flag of convenience or a foreign built ship.
The English harbour we leave from has been saved from falling even further into the doldums, though is still pretty grim, by being bought by the French company, in partnership with the town in France we land in.
I honestly can't see anything to knock in that.
Besides I get a damn good sea food meal of a quality not to be found at any price in Sussex. Oh, and a funny orange shiny hotel bedroom ceiling and rather a lot of dog poop on the pavements, bars that close at 1900 and don't dare try to have dinner after 2000. Try that and you'll be told you are a very naughty boy indeed.

If you offer to buy a woman a drink and she accepts, she still might not like you!

His underpants are M&S. I've been trying to buy him a pair of Pussers Passion Killers online, but without success. He likes his French Au Pair though!

    Re: Vive la France!

Post-war, Frog destroyer visits Portsmouth. Just for once RN puts round peg in round hole & sends as liaison officer a Lt who is particularly fluent in French. One evening he decides to lead the Frog Wardroom ashore to sample the delights of rubble-strewn post-war Pompey. Frog OOD left behind as Cinderella.

Back they come and our man goes down below. Finds his cabin, & particularly bunk, messed up to say the least. Goes back on deck & commences to shave off at OOD (which is where the fluent vernacular French comes in).

OOD: 'But she was a lady, and yours was the only bunk with sheets.'

Told me some years later by the RN Lt concerned.
Edmund Burke: 'Wars may be deferred .. but they cannot be wholly avoided .. to purchase present quiet, at the price of future security, is .. a cowardice of the most base and degrading nature."

Nelson: "You should hate a Frenchman as you do the devil".
