Brother, father, uncle, dad's cousin (Wellington bombers), great aunt all ex crabs. Cousin & nephew serving crabs. Grandfathers (both) ex army. Great uncles (x3) army, another great uncle RN (right through the 1930s & 40s), great great uncle decorated at Jutland, great great grandfather killed at Gallipoli, another great great grandfather a career "Tommy" in the days Kipling used to write about... Even my grandmother was a cook in the Women's Army Corps as a 17 y.o. in 1918 (too young to go over to France). Looking at the photos of her in uniform I can certainly see what grandad saw in her!

I'm sure there are plenty more - most of us regulars rather than H/Os - but I'm too tired to be a***d.

As for myself, I've been an RAF regular, RAFVR, Territorial army... and I'd have loved to top it off with RNR service, but even if I had still lived in the UK I'm too old & knackered for them to be interested.

Ironically (or not), while military history is a passion of mine, the area that interests me most is naturally naval history...

Nil family RN connections, but both of my parents knew & worked with AB William (Bill) Savage; who was awarded a postumous VC at the St. Nazaire raid, being an HO gunner on one of the small support vessels.

The original Mitchells and Butlers Cape Hill brewery site (at Smethwick, Staffs) where they all worked together has since been developed for housing.

At a recent 'memory' lane visit I was quite please to see that they had retained both the WWI and WWII memorials to the fallen brewery staff and even more pleased to see that one of the new wee streets was named for William Savage VC, too.

(M & B Beer in the Blood as several generations worked for that brewery)

RIP AB Bill Savage VC, my childhood hero and an inspiration for my 33 years-worth, too......

Best family dit ever was from my Gran who told me once about her honeymoon in 1916 with Grandad who was on leave from the Royal Army Flying Corps in France. He took her to Dublin for a week over Easter and they were caught up in the uprising. She remembered him throwing himself on top of her in a shop doorway and covering her with his great-coat as the glass fell down on them and the bullets whizzed about. Said that she would never forget the sound of his hob-nails scrabbling on the marble floor as he tried to push her to safety.

Never forget her wagging her finger at me just before I headed to Armagh and telling me to be careful....

Granddad on my dads side was RCT during WW2, spent most of his time driving tank transporters around, spent most of the war in North Africa - Tobruk and the like, moving tanks about.

Don't know mums side of the family
Give a man a fish and he'll feed his family for a day,
teach a man to fish and he'll sit round on a boat all day drinking beer.
