    It's to get you used to wardroom life from the outset, mess bills are a way of life for hossifers.

    The mess bill isn't to pay for food/accommodation it is to be a member of the mess, the same way that Senior Rates/SNCOs pay mess bills.

    Mess funds are also 'non-public' and as such the money won't come from your pay account direct, unlike food/accommodation charges.
