Branch changing, or recat as it's known in the RN, is not always easy to achieve. It is dependant on many factors:
1. The branch you're in.
2. The branch you want to go into.
3. Your DO.
4. Your performance.
I'm sure there are more to consider, but there's a snapshot for you to chew over. I'd imagine one of the AFCO advisers will be able to tell you more in due course."What do you want to do when you grow up son?"
"Join the navy."
"Well you can't do both!"

I agree whole heartdly with Tiddly.
Standy by for incoming from the punctuation/grammar police. lol.Standards of self pride and discipline cost nothing in this mans' navy.

you have no chance of recating from a muppet to an engineer m8e. Two reasons NAMET score and MW is very undermaned at the moment

Get your maths sorted out first and then join the mob in the branch you want to be in..
24 hours in a day, 24 tinnies in a crate, coincidence? I think not...
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

If you did not score high enough in the Recruiting Trade for your Branch of Choice, you may resit the test after 12 months.
If you join the service, you will sign a declaration (S3049 below) which pretty much gives you the answer you seek. The only definitive way of doing the job you want is by joining in that trade from the outset.
Part 5 - Declaration by Candidate
I certify that:
a) The Careers Adviser has informed me of the various branches and specialisations that I can enter and that once I have entered there is no possibility of changing my mind and try to transfer to a different branch. However, I understand that the service may transfer me to any branch that assumes the functions of the branch which I first entered. I am content with my branch of choice and have chosen to enter as:
Warfare Specialist (Mine Warfare)
b) The terms and conditions of service in this rank have been explained to me and I understand them. I have not been persuaded to join by any other offer

Just as Ninja has told you really. If you want AET then the best option is to re-take the RT. The wait can be shortened to 6 months if you do some sort of studies towards giving yourself a better chance of passing the RT.

Nail one's colours to the mast:
A ship's flags were known as colours. In battle the combatants tried to seize the colours flown on the opposing ship. To nail colours to the mast made them difficult to seize and signalled a resolve not to submit.
