    HMS Raleigh Advice and Tips

    * Both sexes must wear appropriate bed wear, as instructors of the opposite sex are required to carry out head counts / bed checks during the silent hours.

    * You may be granted leave privileges during your initial training but free time is limited. You will be in uniform throughout the early part of training. In addition locker space is at a premium; so do not overdo the amount of civilian clothes you bring. This applies to all personal belongings; keep the amount you bring to a bare minimum. This will include the kit you travel in to join HMS Raleigh.

    * Swim wear must contain an inner, and should be as short as possible, as you may need to wear them under other kit.

    * All accommodation blocks are single sex.

    * If you wear contact lenses and also have spectacles bring them both with you. Tinted and photo-chromatic lenses may only be worn for medical reasons. Make sure you have plenty of fluid. Contact lenses should be removed before arrival, to allow for visual acuity checks.

    * You will need to have £50 in cash on joining HMS Raleigh, ie, £50 in hand after any travelling costs including food and sundries paid for whilst en route. During Monday, on completion of signing on, £5 will be needed for a hair cut. You may also find that you need to purchase certain sundries from the Londis shop which will be done on an opportunity basis. You will also need to have £22 available for the Friday of Week 3 to cover the laundry costs accrued during Phase One training.

    * Mobile phones may be taken, however they are only to be used out of working hours, and not in mess decks.

    * It is highly advisable that all recruits wear a wrist watch as time-keeping and time management is an essential part of Naval life.

    * Your wages will be paid directly into a Bank Current Account. Therefore, it is advisable that you open an account prior to joining. If you do not have a Bank Account, there are limited bank facilities (provided by Lloyds Bank) available to enable you to open a bank account at HMS Raleigh. However, this may result in a delay in processing your first payment. The on-site bank is as stated Lloyds, therefore a suitable cash card is recommended.

    * Training shoes will be issued to all recruits to undertake physical training evolutions, however own training shoes may be brought for recreational use.

    * You should not bring any of the following:

    a. Valuable items of jewellery.
    b. Excessive amounts of cash.
    c. Cars or motorcycles.
    d. Portable DVD Players / Walkman / MP3 stereos (headphones not allowed).
    e. Offensive weapons (including pocket knives).
    f. Alcohol.
    g. Pornography (including images on phones).
    h. Non – prescribed medicines.

More advice on kit can be found here on the Royal Navy website.

Taking your own iron isn't a bad idea, but remember that locker space is at a premium.

As has been said, don't take much in the way of civillian clothes. In fact, the set of civvies you stand up in when you arrive will be plenty for your time there.

Take BLACK socks only (and keep your issued pair for kit musters).

If you smoke, do yourself a favour and stop.

Get accustomed to getting up early in the morning if you aren't already - you'll be up at 0530; lights out at 2200.

If you were a sea cadet, don't shout it from the rooftops. You might know a lot of the stuff already eg drill, kit upkeep, but don't act like you know it all.

Finally - don't worry about it too much - you are there to learn. Trying to be prepared is good, but don't try to be the finished product on the day you join.

Have a look at the recruit diaries on the RN website; they are surprisingly bullshit-free.

Talk to your instructors as much as you need. The two for our entry are absolutely amazing. They carry rib- ended mop handles for poking people with ("For your pleasure"), but very good blokes.

Do take an iron. No doubt about it, you need an iron.

Notebook and pens will be provided, but it's good to have spares.

A lot of things you can get away with if you don't get caught.

Most important thing to take is a positive attitude. Never be the one that whinges or says, "I can't be bothered", or "I don't want to". Ever. don't like it? Tough, it's not that bad. Just keep it to yourself and you will be rewarded with people's respect.

Start doing your own washing and ironing before you go, it'll come as less of a shock when you get there. Likewise, start wearing your hair short.

    KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN!

Never answer back to a senoir rate or officer

Try. That's all the Navy really asks and your Div staff would rather spend their time and effort on someone who's interested.

Don't be too critical of the food. It's not great but you'll be piling in the calories, and you'll need to.

Take the time to socialise with your new mates and have a beer or two if you can. It's a long eight weeks if all you do is phys and kit maintenance.
    60% of the time,
    It works, everytime!

We talked about this at the pre-join brief. Sitting in a corner listening to music on your headphones isn't very team-oriented. Raleigh is a big team working exercise so they don't like it. You can listen to music on speakers apparently.

    Spot on.

Onboard ship you cannot hear emergency broadcasts with "Take That" belting out their latest Hit Parade number in your lugs.

Plus the fact, iPod's are a bit of a sore point with regard boarding ops in the RN at present.

lol So you can't even take them on board with you?

Oh and it wouldn't be Take That, it'd be THIS!, and THIS, AND THIS!

    Awesome stuff!

The truth is just about everyone may have mp3 players, but they may only be used when appropriate.

Their use is banned at Raleigh, so you leave it locked away.
