Bugger! I hate that! Another bit of dear olde England departs. Oh well, never mind, go back to the other suggestions then!
Last bit though - must be haddock!!
China.

Yeah, the Maggie's not bad, although it's overrated.... if you go there, expect to be waiting a fair while!
As far as I'm concerned, it's a toss-up between Thompson's in Wetwang and that little place near the coastguard station in Scarborough...

Have to agree on Thompsons, but it seems the Wetwang outlet has been sold.

As far as I remember, it's still called Thompson's... even if it's not part of the same chian. Don't quote me on that though...

Ireland EH? Wonder if I could look up the McKenzie family (my mother's side) Anyway, I know of a good fish and chip shop. Thanks for the tips and shoppes. Think I'll just move across to the UK and just be done with it.

Bloody heathens!
There is only one Fish & Chip shop in the whole world:
s160912024.websitehome...menus.html
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/..._Ramsden's
Correction to wikipedia - the Hong Kong restaurant closed a number of years ago. We're still in mourning over here.
Endex.

Trouble is China, Harry's is merely a franchise these days, so the quality will vary immensely.
The one in Edinburgh is shut now as well. It was a good one, too.
A slight digression. I remember reading a story about one Peter Mandelson campaigning in Hartlepool. He went into a fish shop to bother the natives, and when he spotted the fanny of mushy peas, said "The guacamole looks good"!

...but your local pub is a franchise; your high street bank is a franchise. Why should Harry Ramsden's not be any different? To be honest I think HRs are very expensive - I'd much rather buy my fish supper from the independent fish 'n' chip shop around the corner...

Most chippies in and around the midlands are good....it must be the oils/fats they cook em in.
I can recommend The Marlborough, by the "lifting bridge" in Weymouth....best around for miles in the south....hence they always have big queues.

A lot depends on what you grew up with when tastes were still formative. I grew up with the taste of fish and chips from a fish frier of note, Fred Sidebottom, Edgeley, Stockport. Later on, when Sidebottom's closed for his holidays, I had fish and chips from Pallier's (ex Andrew lad) Fish Bar in Cheadle Heath. Both excellent but Pallier had the edge on price and, importantly, both used best beef dripping.
Years later, living in London, I had local fish and chips and they had a sticky, oily taste; fried, of course, in best corn oil. My next door neighbour thought they were brilliant. He had a van so he helped me to move some stuff from "home" to London. I treated him to some of Pallier's finest and, low and behold, he hated them! There's no accounting for taste.

Topstop:
When I was up north I remember if you wanted cod you had to ask for it and it was cooked special. Now I`m down south you have to order the haddock.
Here in York, we always asked for 'One of each' as all they served was cod, had to go to Whitby or Scarborough for haddock or plaice.

For the nostalgic among us - Fishery Protection Squadron, 1965-66: expend the quarterly live Mk 10 round whilst with the fishing fleet off Iceland, and you had fresh cod and chips every evening for 2 bob (10p funny money) - it was that fresh you hit the fish with a stick before it went into the fryer - food of the Gods !!!!!!!!!

Cod, haddock, rock salmon, I'll eat 'em all but for a seafood treat you can't beat a pint of jellied eels. And before you northern shites start squirming just one question - have you ever tasted 'em? Bloody brilliant!

Lets be serious here now!
English Fish and Chips come with mushy peas (disgusting way to treat the noble pea) but Scottish Fish and Chips are served simply with "saltnsauce"!
Best Fish and Chips in the UK come from Anstruther (Fife, Scotland) where the fish is off the boats from Pitenweem and the chips are from local grown tatties!
As for the offshore business, most people would recommend the Ashvale in Aberdeen (again, good fresh fish) where you used to get the "Ashvale Whale" on the menu.
Scottish chippies have of course the added bonus of a deep fired Mars Bar for desert!
