HMS Loch Killisport, Far East 1963/4. A puppy wandered up the gangway
in Tawau, North Borneo I think and was adopted by the Forward Watchkeepers mess.
Quartermasters and Bosuns Mates, of which I was one. Named after that
best watches of all "Dog Watches"

The first pic shows Dog Watches in centre between Swede Thwaites, on
the right, and A.N. Other. If any one knows of Swede, hailed from Norfolk
please put me in touch. The second pic being a the mutt himself. As far as
I know DW remained on board for the last commission 64/66.

It was the Far East, we did not do bumps nor go out into typhoons.

Bulwark, 1972-73, Bollocks the Budgie resided in 2D Comms Mess after a killick bunting joined the ship post divorce with just his pussers grip and one cage containing Bollocks. Bollocks made an excellent target for the ring pulls that one could flick in his direction as he ducked and dived around the mess and was excellent fun when he used to fly into the double banked polished lockers thinking they were an extension of the mess, always great fun when the officer on his rounds said "and whats his name?", reply, " bollocks Sir"!His demise came on a run ashore to the Avondale outside St Levans gate, poor thing flew off and was never seen again.

Same ship, the stockers used to have a ships cat onboard, the name escapes me but the poor thing went over the side whilst we were up in Arctic waters.

One chap in Mercury couldn't be bothered with all that farting around with real animals stuff so he bought himself a lovely fish tank with lighting and heating, nice coloured sand, bits of weed, little rocks and stuff and then filled it with lots of tinned fish, officers once again were not amused !

Flakers must have been drafted to/from Brinton at HMS Jufair? as my brother has mentioned Flakers from his time on the Brinton around about this time.

I'm suprised no one mentioned HMS Minerva's Owl this was a famous mascot which was held in care at Painton Zoo. I can remember going onboard and she was there for every public occation my mate was sent on a Falconer's Course just to be trained as her handler. And yes when I was on HMS Beaver we did have a soft toy beaver as it's mascot (you laugh) but It was on our global and was take at every important funtion and photographed and then autioned off at the end of the deployment. In whent for 3 figures (IT WAS the Wardroom's pride and joy)

    Engines,
Flakers was drafted from Burnaston to Brinton in March '69.
We met Brinton in Mombassa, they where on their way up the gulf,
we were on our way to Gib to pay off.

The Lungcancer got the 'Type 21 WIGS' parrot in 1994. Think it used to live in the T21 stoker's mess. Was 'dumped' in our mess, squawked (sp?) and shit everywhere for a few days before being 'presented' to the wardroom (the alternative being float tested). Continued to squawk and shit (but far away from us).

I think the The Scum bought a replacement when the original kicked the bucket, but it went mental and ripped all its feathers out, so got drafted shore side.

Tried to check on the RN website, but I appear to be banned
