Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the UK and the fifth largest in the world. For special services its capacity with standing...

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the UK and the fifth largest in the world. For special services its capacity with standing is 3,500 persons or 2,300 seated. The upcoming Battle of the Atlantic commemoration is just such a special service and it will be host to veterans of that six-year battle from both the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy.

I have no idea of the distribution of tickets to other naval organisations but I am reliably informed that the Submariners Association which nationally numbers 4,000 members have been allocated just a single digit number of tickets to attend this last historic commemoration service to be held in the city. Protocol dictates each organisation be represented by a standard bearer at the service, but each bearer will be required to have a ticket from the total awarded to his or her naval association. You will also require a ticket to be a spectator. or even a member of marching platoons for the march-past.

Wives and families of veterans have not been considered for tickets, but you can safely bet the luminaries attending will have their significant others along with other family members in tow with them on the day. After years of RN management someone has seen fit to outsource the organisational responsibility of this event to a civilian contractor with dubious skills and disastrous results.

It will be interesting to see how many local and national dignitaries including MPs,councillors; civil servants, extraneous members of the clergy and local government, et al, will be found seats in the cathedral. Just how many of those will have any naval affiliation that entitles them to take a veterans place at a service dedicated to those who fought the good fight? The majority of the great and good establishment attending will not have served in the military, ever been on a wave nor heard a shot fired in anger. The organisers have launched many appeals urging all holders of the Atlantic Star medal to come forward and to be the focus of attention that they so richly deserve and they have responded in large numbers. It’s a crying shame more thought and planning was not given to ensuring that maximum numbers of them could be accommodated within the confines of the cathedral for the proceedings.

Just half a mile down the road we have the RC Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King with a seated capacity of 2,000. In this age of high technology and inter-denominational services surely it would have been possible to run this service in tandem between the two cathedrals on a television link. This way at least another 2,000 elderly veterans would have had a seat for the service.

Instead a lot of aged veterans proudly wearing their Atlantic Star medals and numerous other meritorious service decorations will be relegated to standing outside in the precarious elements of the British climate to listen to the service over PA systems. Many of them will be infirm but their physical discomfiture will not detract them from paying homage and respect to fallen comrades, who with them bravely protected our sea lanes in time of war.

A land fit for heroes to live in? If this is the way we intend to treat them please don’t insult my intelligence and sense of patriotism.

Hey

Im just asking advice regarding on what trade/specialisationwould enable me to go on the frontline (land based or sea based) but not to just be a normal grunt. Im now about to complete a degree in leadership in public services however i want a hands on job, not a pencil pusher, so im open to rating level trades/specialisation.

Ive spoken to a few ex navy/marines and the general consesus is medical technician and then opt for the all arms commando course, and if i wanted to go further then to apply for sbs.

What other trades/specialisations would you guys suggest regarding the specifications ive listed (frontline, hands on, not just a basic marine)

Hello all. Somebody has recommended I post on Rum Ration to see if anyone has any knowledge of naval graves from the 19th century.

I'm a historian of China who's recently published a book called "Chusan: The Opium Wars and the Forgotten Story of Britain's First Chinese Island" - it's reviewed in Rum Ration's book reviews section if anyone's interested in this period.

To get to the point, during the 1840s the British occupied a Chinese island called Chusan (now Zhoushan) for a few years. Early on in the occupation there was a very high death rate amongst the British forces, and there are documentary accounts and watercolours of the Royal Navy burying its dead on a small island in Dinghai harbour, which the British called Grave Island (the pork chop shaped islet at 30deg 00' 08.46" N 122deg 06' 17.50" E). I've visited Dinghai and the island doesn't seem to have been much disturbed, and I'd be surprised if there weren't tangible remains to be excavated.

If this were to involve a British team, it's the kind of thing that could only possibly be done with the high-level permission and involvement of the Chinese, possibly even the government in Beijing, and it'd need a well-connected organisation from the British side. I already have initial links to the local city government to help start this off.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission says that they don't deal with pre-WWI burials, but this extremely rare graveyard seems too important to British and RN history to just ignore as being too early.

Anybody have any thoughts on any official organisation that might be willing and able to throw its weight in? Cheers!

Having read the sad story of the deceased RM caused me to reflect on my own recent experience.

I recently attended the funeral of an ex wartime FAA aircrewman who had served with courage & distinction, he died in his 90's in a care home having suffered poor health & dementia, & I attended as a representative, I duly turned up at the crematorium booted & suited to await the arrival of the hearse & mourners cars, when it arrived it was just the coffin in the hearse, all the mourners had come in their own vehicles, no one accompanied the coffin/him on his final journey, & after the short service they all just drifted off, "no gathering to reflect on his life, achievements or character" obviously straight back to their usual routine.

Speaking to the vicar who had taken the service he said that this was now common practice with the elderly, he new nothing of the deceased other than what he'd been told over the phone & he'd been booked by the funeral directors, he had no post funeral meeting/contact booked with the family to check that they were happy with the service.

What a bloody disgrace that parts of society have become so disrespectful of our old warriors who defended our country & freedom.:angry5:

After researching question on the Internet I found they always ask you if you have ever taken any drugs. Whilst at uni I did try marijuana but only a few puffs and only once. I have mentioned this to people and I have got mixed reactions back as to whether or not I should declare it. It happened years ago and I do not consider a puff or two overly significant. What could I say to support my case? Obviously I need to declare it but would that be me out of the running straight away?
