Yes the Navy has changed beyond all recognition from the days of yore, and from a nostalgic point of view it is beyond anything we ever knew.
Rat shit?. I never said or implied it was rat shit. Why do you think it has, because we ain't there?
I had done 11 years when you left and only had 2 to do to finish my 9 (and 3 boys service) so I was in your navy, and had no say whatsoever in policy making, the stupid Admiralty forgot to ask me.
But I would still put my money on these "Sprogs," to hack it, and weapon for weapon, technology for technology, they are as good as we ever were.
Because of the modern technology they use, they can do as much damage in a couple of hours as we did in a couple of days.
Yes they have got stupid uniforms, they have as much say as we did about them,(fcuk all) Poor b*stards get no rum, and they don't get sent away for two years at a time, and most definitely have smaller c0ck. But they sure have the same size balls, so putting aside the we were better argument, when was the last time YOU served, and could you handle it now.
You (we) could be as offensive and abusive as much as we liked to anyone we liked as long as we could fill them in, but how would you function now with the NOW pressures, and that is what you should ask yourself not dismiss them and not even know about them.
Why should they listen to us if we won't listen to them?
They still spin good enough dits for me to feel jealous that they are and I ain't there. The little b*stards.

When I was a child I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child.
When I became a man I joined Rum Ration, it was a natural progression.
But with swearing.

Yup sure am an old fart, but like I tell the kids when they badger me, its my heart that has been damaged, not my brain.

I see the kids who come here with my daughter and they are not the same type of sailor as I was, but I would have been real shit up a mast spreading canvas, and the first broadside I had to face in Nelson's navy would have had me dying from terminal diarrhoea.

Your looking back with rose tinted glasses Jack. I joined in 1973 and left in 2007 and saw shed loads of changes from the introduction of berets to the new rig. Reel to reel movies were a fun but give me a DVD any time. In "your day" (and to a certain extent mine as well) there were shed loads of Jack and an awful lot of barrack stanchions that the system seemed to forget and had made "mini" careers wherever they had hidden. The days of the cushy shore draft have long gone, most have been made obsolete or been civilianised to save money so there aren't any good shore drafts and the sea/shore ratio is pretty shite IMHO. I get the feeling you are a member of the "bring back National Service" brigade with no idea or concept of the level of training required to maintain a modern warship (above or below water), your day has been and gone and mine is on the way out. I honestly don't think backward looking Luddites like yourself have got a clue as to what goes on these days.

i gotta say i agree with wrecker rumrat and the jimmy on this one i done 12 years starting in 97 i could see the changes from then upto now and i am pretty sure ive also said not in my day.
but at least i understand that time does change and the RN has to change with it.
IMHO i think they have it harder now than even what i had let alone the older ratings
yes they get e-mails and better accomodation ashore but im sure as shit most of them would swap all that for decent jollies and better dits(i would've).
and the discipline thing is utter shite they are probably more disciplined.
back when jack was jack etc jack himself got away with a lot more then than he ever would nowIn the beginning GOD Created Submariners. Submariners Created Submarines and Submarines Created the Brotherhood.

If you re-read all these posts it seems that most of the generations are here, 50's 60', 70's 80's 90's etc. All have the same thing to say.... 'it all changed after my day.' Speaks for itself.

I know I took a department of 140 JRs to war in Iraq in 2003 proudest fcuking old man in the Royal Navy when we got back, true it went to ratshit afterwards but some of my lads and lasses were just over 18 they did this country proud and I for one have nothing but respect for the modern matelot. After 35 years service I think I know just a little of "life experience" Yeah they are different to us in our younger days but that doesn't make them any less dedicted especially when the shite hits the fan
The son of an illegal immigrant asks his dad, "Dad, what's democracy?"
"Well, son, that's when the British work and we get all the benefits from it!"
"But Dad, aren't the British people unhappy about that?"
"They sure are son, but that's called 'racism.'"
