14-05-12, 10:02 #279Father in Law: Trooper Joseph Walker (Bob) Late of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment died 11 May 2012 age 88.
Bob was a bit of a hero and served with the 1st RTR duing the war in North Africa, one of Monty's "Desert Rats", driving Churchill Tanks. He took part in the Salerno Landings in Italy and it was during the Italy campaign that the was in a troop of three tanks when they came under heavy fire. Bob resued another Trooper from a burning tank who had lost both his legs and carried on his back and was Mentioned in Despatches for Gallant and Distinguished service. He wore his Oak Leaf with pride. He continued the war through Normandy and into Germany in Sherman Tanks (which he said were crap).Smother me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians!
14-05-12, 10:06 #280Hats off to the FIL MGM, sod being in tanks, especially Shermans when they were up against Panzers like the Tiger, Panther etc.
Sh1t shot, pumping slop.
