As has already been said, the Anstruther Fish Bar (in Anstruther, Fife) is superlative, but there are some very good chippies in Cornwall, and a couple in Devon; the nearer you are to where the catches are landed, the more likely you are to find one. In my experience, fish 'n' chips taste better after a day spent outdoors, regardless of where they come from.

Harry Ramsdens fish and chips as much like fish n chips
as
A McD's is to a real beef home made burger
Stick to the ordinary fish n chip shops, and if you want a real treat eat them out of the paper, with your fingers not a plastic box or plate with a knife and fork

The one on the hill in Helston, in the town centre, might be the one that had the van that came out to Seahawk and parked up Fri/Sat evenings.
There is also a good one on the quay in Weymouth, on The Nothe side. The late (sorry, last) Mrs CP dropped her mobile phone in the harbour rather than lose her fish and chips.
Looking back, she was filling out like a sumo wrestler, so no surprises there.

I can't believe that I'm on a RN site writng about this. Grog-rat is spot on the best fish in the country is to be had in Grimsby. Tasty haddock, cooked to perfection. Cod is tastless when deep fried it is better baked or shallow fried with herbs/sauce. I will only eat fish from a chippy when up there, everywhere else justs disappoints. Some one else on this thread said that most chippies in the midlands are good!!!!!? Must be that fresh off the trawler fish they serve! As for Harry Ramsden? He's a c**t and so is anybody who believes that frozen, franchise shit is tasty.

The Fish and Chips on Brighton seafront are good, bit pricey though as they only use gay fish.

If you're in London, I recommend The Golden Hind on Marylebone Lane. Run by a succession of Mediterranean types, present owner is Greek.

Magpie Cafe in Whitby, best bar none.
Queue for ages while they take fresh fish off the boats in front of you.
