Edward_Teach:
Most chippies in and around the midlands are good....it must be the oils/fats they cook em in.

I can recommend The Marlborough, by the "lifting bridge" in Weymouth....best around for miles in the south....hence they always have big queues.

Marlborough has the recent advantage of a serious fire and refit so its extra clean at the moment

McCloggie:
Lets be serious here now!

English Fish and Chips come with mushy peas (disgusting way to treat the noble pea) but Scottish Fish and Chips are served simply with "saltnsauce"!

Best Fish and Chips in the UK come from Anstruther (Fife, Scotland) where the fish is off the boats from Pitenweem and the chips are from local grown tatties!

As for the offshore business, most people would recommend the Ashvale in Aberdeen (again, good fresh fish) where you used to get the "Ashvale Whale" on the menu.

Scottish chippies have of course the added bonus of a deep fired Mars Bar for desert!

McC

You're displaying your origins, now, McC, as "saltnsauce" is an East Coast habit.
The quality of the fish and chips in Anstruther has slipped since the chippy changed hands, although it's still worth a visit. The Townhead chippy in Biggar is far, far better.

I like mushy peas, but you can stick the deep fried Mars Bars where the sun don't shine!

As an aside, I remember my first visit to the Gosport Ferry from Collingwood during part 2 training. We went to the chippy on the Hard and I was sickened to realise my fish still had the skin on. How disgusting is that?

Ref: Jockanese Fish'n'Chip Shops.

It's a little known fact, but most are run
by persons of "Italian" extraction, the
reason being that their dads were captured
Prisoners-of-War, and none of 'em went
back to the Old Country when the War
ended. They settled in Scotland and took
over the world of Fish, Chips and Deep
Fried Haggis! Many others emigrated to
Scotland to escape the Facist regime.
Zavaronis Chippy, Rothesay was always
a good one, when "Perisher Running" on
Diesel Boats.

.....or so I'm reliably informed.

Billy, I'm barred from Zavaronis.

I daren't go back because they're bound to recognise me, as I've not changed a jot in the past twenty odd years.

Used to be chippy in the Galatown (Kirkcaldy - now I am showing my origins!!) run by "Italians".

Nothing special but they used to check if the fat was hot by spitting in it!

Thanks Mates, I've put together a list of places to have fish & chips from all over England and Scotland. Have had Scottish influence growing up as well as English. As hard as we tryo to make things authentic, we simply cannot, because we don't have the same things here. Like mushy peas for starters. I also see the difference in regions of the UK and how Fish and Chips are enjoyed.
Just last evening I went to a local restaurant to have diner. I noticed fish & chips were on the menu. My selection had been made instantly. What I got seemed to pale in com[arison to all the replies I've read here. Lastly I had to ask for vinegar, which my waitress thought was a bit odd. I'll enjoy what we have here with an open mind. I'm just going to make it a point to visit a fish and chip shop each time I'm in England on holiday. I get an excuse to see England and Scotland and enjoy fine food at the same time. Thank you all very, very much.

A word to the wise matey; avoid Scotland like the plague. It's full of Jockanese gits with chips on their shoulders (if you see what I mean!)

Attention Leatherneck!

I 'aint read the entire thread, but, as far as Fish'n'Chip Awards
go - Harry is apparently unbeatable. Maybe you can order
some via E-mail (They may be a wee bit on the cold side
when they arrive....nothing that two minutes in a Microwave
won't cure).
