We used to keep our coal in't bath. Me mother strained 'er back carrying it upstairs.
And in the frying, which must be done in beef dripping. And the fish, which must be cod, and bugger the EU!
Sorry, haddock is far superior to tasteless cod.
Is this a regional preference, I wonder - as a rugrat brought up in Lincolnshire, haddock was the generally preferred fish, while darn sarf cod seemed to be favourite.

This threat has made me hungry! Fish & Chips was a way of life round my home growing up. My fater's step-father was from Scotland, Dundee to be exact. Fishing, fish & chips and the beer garden oh yeah gulf, bag pipes and Scotch. Sound typical?
I was always laddie at this particular granny's house. Among other things, home-made short bread headed my list of reasons to visit granny.

Absolutely superb!
Edited to add that theyre even better than Neptune Chippy, the one run by the duty chefs in the early eighties. Well, they tasted superb after a skinful at the Bop!

Now I have tasted the delights of many a chippie, and the Bewdley Fish Bar is the best in the world. If anyone is anywhere near Kidderminster I would seriously look it up!
And is it weird that the best spag bol I ever had was in Shanghai?

Yorkshire has the best Fish and Chips! What utter bollox. In North East Lincolnshire you will find a small fishing port called Great Grimsby, home to the best fish and chips in the entire world, and probably the only place you can get fish, chips and mushy peas for £1.50.

Ok, the secret is in the batter, which takes a good Ale, so much for America.
Thank you mates.

When I was up north I remember if you wanted cod you had to ask for it and it was cooked special. Now I`m down south you have to order the haddock.

I remember popping into a chippy in Todmorden having just finished a twelve mile recce walking over the moors from Hollingworth Lake.
Would you like a some scrapings or whatever she asked meaning the bits of batter left from the fish floating in the oil. They had pile of this cast off batter for those required a scoop. I declined the invitation.
The local chipper over here in Ireland sells the most disgusting excuse for fish and chips I have ever tasted. You could have undersealed the car with the brown paper bag, hours later the taste was still in my mouth. From the fish and chips not the bag!!!!
Dropped on a good one in Kendal on our way back from Shap. Across the road from the river never noted the name just happy it was open with the dick shutting the door at 2000 in Shap.
In Kendal two pieces of fish and a bag of chips tasted good after a few hours over the moors. Think it was The Wee Chippy.
Leo Burdock across the road from Christchurch cathedral in Dublin was a touch better. If you can get served that is.
All Yanks visit Ireland nice to see the old country expecting The Quiet Man to go trotting past in his donkey and cart.
