My point precisely. Regardless of whether it is sugarwater, perfume, or the use of softly-spoken words, these 'treatments' often allow people who are ill the extra fortitude they need to enable their bodies to fight back. If these 'treatments' are just tricks of the mind, who really cares (apart from those who push chemical intervention at all costs) if they are efficacious? Personally, I wouldn't use homeopathy or aromatherapy, and though hypnotherapy has several studies which demonstrate its effectiveness (though whether or not it passes the angrydoc test, I'm not sure) I feel sure I am in the ten-percentile who is resistant to hypnosis, and would be unlikely to use it. (I have seen the results on others, though, and would thoroughly recommend it.) I also avoid the use of chemicals, not because I don't believe they work, but because I believe we are becoming over-dependent on them. What I would not do is pontificate to others based on an ill-informed opinion (at that goes for both sides of the debate).

... but, if a patient ... experiences a sense of comfort, of being cared for, of any kind of wellbeing via an aromatherapy treatment, can it really be wrong?

I hate the smell of (most) perfumes. Walking into the ground floor of a large department store is liable to genuinely induce a headache (which I would obviously not treat with analgesics).

Fair enough; you could treat it with peppermint oil, instead.
